Robert Burns was a man of strong passions as his life of poetry testifies to. A man of his time when people could, and did, give of their unbridled opinions.
In this portrait, I have tried to capture something of these strong colours in his character through first laying down a mix of contrasting colours, then overlaying his more recognisable features on top.
His early death at 36 means the image we remember most about him, is this youthful one before time could take it’s toll.
As he himself would say,
“A man’s a man for a’ that”

This is the classic Trench One skull which has been the subject of many mural pieces over the years. Often seen as a colourful ‘gashadokuro’, this gatekeeper between realms stands watch across the travellers path.

Reid’s graphic art is formed somewhere in the in the spaces between graffiti and Italian Futurism, with his works in the Burns collection paying a nod to the more risqué side of the Bard’s reputation.
As well as being a master of social commentary, Burns was also well known as having a fondness for the ladies, spirits that are both reflected in Reid’s works, too.
